AI Search Optimisation: How to Get Your Store Cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews
نُشر في August 3, 2026
Answer engines cite sources differently from search engines. What actually gets quoted, how to structure a page for it, and how to check whether bots can reach you.
Answer engines — AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot — do not rank ten links. They synthesise an answer and cite a handful of sources. Getting cited comes down to four things: be crawlable by the AI bots, answer one question per section in the first two sentences, publish specifics that can be quoted, and be corroborated elsewhere. Vague marketing copy is invisible to them.
First: can they actually reach you?
Check your robots.txt before anything else. Several AI crawlers are distinct from Googlebot and must be allowed separately. The main ones to consider:
- GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI)
- ClaudeBot (Anthropic)
- PerplexityBot
- Google-Extended (governs Gemini/AI training use, separate from Googlebot)
- Applebot-Extended, Amazonbot, CCBot
Blocking them is a legitimate business decision — but if your goal is to be cited as a source, they need access. Many stores block them by accident through a default configuration and then wonder why they never appear.
What actually gets quoted
Having read how these systems select sources, the pattern is consistent. They quote:
- Direct answers. A section that answers its own heading in the first sentence, then explains. Not three paragraphs of preamble before the point.
- Specific numbers and named entities. "VAT is 15% in Saudi Arabia and 5% in the UAE" is quotable. "Tax rates vary by country" is not.
- Lists and tables. Comparison tables and numbered steps are extracted far more often than prose making the same point.
- Explicit questions as headings. A heading phrased as the question a person asks maps directly onto the query.
- Statements with a scope. "For consignments up to €150" is more citable than "for small orders", because it can be reused without ambiguity.
How to structure a page for citation
- Lead with the answer. Put a 40–60 word direct answer at the top of the page, before the context. If a reader can stop there and be correct, an answer engine can quote it.
- One idea per H2. Do not bury three answers in one section.
- Add a real FAQ. Actual questions people ask, each answered in two to four sentences. This is the single highest-return structural change for AI visibility.
- Use tables for comparisons. Anything with "vs" or "by country" belongs in a table.
- Date and maintain the page. Freshness is a selection signal, and a page contradicted by newer information gets dropped.
- Mark it up.

Being corroborated matters more than being optimised
Answer engines weigh whether other sources agree with you. That makes classic reputation work directly relevant:
- Consistent business information everywhere you appear — name, address, contact.
- A clear entity. Your Organization markup and about page should make it obvious what your company is, who it serves, and where.
- Third-party mentions. Being described accurately elsewhere is a stronger citation signal than describing yourself well.
What this means for an online store specifically
Product pages are rarely cited; guides, comparisons and FAQs are. The realistic strategy for a store:
- Write the buying guide for your category, with real criteria and numbers.
- Write honest comparisons, including of alternatives you do not sell.
- Publish the practical local specifics nobody else bothers with — delivery times to actual cities, sizing in centimetres, what a fee actually costs.
- Answer the questions your support inbox receives most. Those are literally the queries.
This is the same content that ranks in classic search — see Arabic SEO for the Gulf — which is the point: AI visibility is not a separate discipline, it is a stricter version of the same one.
Frequently asked questions
Should I block AI crawlers?
Only if you do not want to be cited. If you want AI referral traffic and brand mentions, allow the search-oriented ones at minimum.
Does structured data guarantee citation?
No. It helps machines parse the page correctly, but clarity and specificity of the text matter more.
How do I check if I am being cited?
Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask and see who they cite. Repeat monthly; it changes.
Is this different from SEO?
It is a subset with stricter requirements: answer-first structure, verifiable specifics, and corroboration. Good SEO content is most of the way there already.
