Payment Gateways in Saudi Arabia: mada, Apple Pay and What Actually Converts

Which payment methods Saudi shoppers really use, what a gateway costs, what it asks for at onboarding, and the order to enable them in.

If you accept only international credit cards in Saudi Arabia, you are turning away a large share of buyers. Most Saudi bank cards run on mada, the national debit network, and Apple Pay is unusually dominant on mobile. The winning combination for a new store is mada plus cash on delivery, then Apple Pay, then buy-now-pay-later.

Here is how each option behaves in practice, and what your gateway will ask for.

The methods, ranked by impact on a new store

MethodWho uses itTypical friction
madaThe default Saudi debit card. Broadest reach of any single method.Requires a local gateway and a Saudi bank account.
Apple PayVery high share of mobile checkouts, skews to higher-value baskets.Needs domain verification with your gateway; trivial once set up.
Cash on deliveryFirst-time buyers, smaller cities, lower-trust categories.Fees, cash handling, and a higher return rate.
Tabby / Tamara (BNPL)Mainstream on baskets above roughly 300 SAR.Merchant fee is higher than card; approval needed.
Visa / Mastercard creditFrequent online buyers, expatriates, cross-border.Standard, but insufficient on its own.
STC Pay and walletsYounger buyers, peer-to-peer habits.Useful add-on, not a foundation.

What a gateway will ask you for

Onboarding is where launches slip. Have these ready before you apply:

  1. Commercial registration with an activity that covers online retail.
  2. A Saudi bank account (IBAN) in the registered entity's name.
  3. National ID or Iqama of the owner or authorised signatory.
  4. VAT certificate, if you are registered.
  5. A live store URL with visible policy pages — refund policy, terms, contact details and prices. Several providers reject applications simply because the store has no return policy published.
  6. Sometimes a Maroof listing.

Point 5 is the one people skip. Publish the policy pages before you apply and you save a rejection cycle. The list is in the Saudi legal checklist.

What it costs

Expect a percentage per transaction plus a small fixed fee, with mada typically cheaper than international credit cards, and BNPL more expensive than both. Two costs people forget to model:

  • Settlement delay. The gap between the sale and the money landing in your account is working capital you do not have. Ask for it in days, in writing.
  • Chargeback and refund handling. Ask whether the transaction fee is returned on a refund. Usually it is not.

Enable them in this order

  1. Cash on delivery on day one. Zero setup, and it lets you sell while the gateway application is processed.
  2. mada as soon as you are approved. This is the volume method.
  3. Apple Pay immediately after. It is the cheapest conversion win available to a mobile-first store — one tap instead of a 16-digit card entry.
  4. BNPL once you have steady orders. It lifts average order value, but it is not what makes a store work in month one.

The checkout matters as much as the gateway

A perfect payment stack behind a bad checkout still loses money. The rules that move the number in the Gulf:

  • No forced account creation. Guest checkout, always.
  • Phone number as the primary identifier, not email. It is how buyers and couriers actually communicate.
  • Show the total, with VAT and delivery, before the payment step.
  • Arabic labels and right-to-left layout that were designed that way, not translated at the last minute.
  • A WhatsApp fallback for buyers who abandon — recovering a stalled order by message is normal here, not intrusive.

More on that in reducing cart abandonment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I accept mada without a Saudi company?

No. mada acquiring requires a locally registered entity and a Saudi bank account.

Is Apple Pay worth it for a small store?

Yes — it is usually the highest-converting method on mobile and costs no more than a card transaction.

Should I offer cash on delivery if I already have cards?

For most consumer categories in the Kingdom, yes, at least while you build a reputation. Price the fee and return rate in — see the Gulf COD guide.

How long does gateway approval take?

Days to a few weeks, driven mostly by how complete your documents and your store pages are.

Storilive stores ship with an Arabic-first checkout, cash on delivery built in, and gateway settings ready for your mada provider.
