Selling Online in the Netherlands and Belgium: iDEAL, Bancontact and Language
نُشر في August 3, 2026
Two small, wealthy, high-adoption markets that punish one specific mistake: missing the local payment method. Plus the Dutch/French language split in Belgium.
The Netherlands and Belgium are compact, wealthy markets with very high online adoption and short delivery distances — and both are unforgiving about one thing: the local payment method. In the Netherlands that is iDEAL; in Belgium it is Bancontact. A store without them converts a fraction of what it should, no matter how good the rest is.
The Netherlands
Payment. iDEAL is the dominant online payment method — a bank-transfer-based scheme rather than a card. Dutch shoppers reach for it by default. Offering only cards and PayPal is the single biggest avoidable loss in this market.
Delivery. Fast and dense. Next-day is normal, pickup points and parcel lockers are widely used, and buyers expect a choice of delivery moment. The main national carriers are well recognised and carry trust.
Language. Dutch. English is very widely spoken, and a well-written English site will not offend — but it will convert below a Dutch one. Translate the pages that sell.
Culture. Dutch buyers are price-aware and comparison-driven. Clear specifications, honest delivery dates and visible reviews matter more than lifestyle imagery.
Belgium
Belgium's complication is language, and it is worth taking seriously.
- Flanders (north) speaks Dutch.
- Wallonia (south) speaks French.
- Brussels is bilingual, with French dominant in practice.
- There is a smaller German-speaking community in the east.
A Belgian store that offers only one of Dutch or French is addressing part of the country. If you must pick one, pick the one matching your existing content and your target region — but be explicit about who you serve rather than hoping nobody notices.
Payment. Bancontact is the domestic scheme and the default for many buyers, alongside cards and PayPal.
Delivery. Short distances, strong pickup-point culture, and cross-border delivery from the Netherlands, France and Germany is routine — which also means your competitors are regional, not just Belgian.
Serving both from one store
These two markets pair well and are often served together. To do it properly:
- Enable iDEAL and Bancontact both. They are the price of entry.
- Offer Dutch and French. At minimum for product pages, delivery, returns and checkout.
- Show prices in euros with VAT included, and state the delivery cost early.
- Offer pickup points, not only home delivery.
- Handle VAT correctly. Both are EU members; above the €10,000 EU-wide threshold you charge the destination rate — see EU VAT and OSS.
Why these markets are worth it for a smaller store
High income, high trust in online shopping, short delivery distances, and — crucially — less crowded than Germany or France for many niches. A focused store with the right payment methods and honest logistics can establish itself here faster than in a larger market where every keyword is contested.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sell in the Netherlands without iDEAL?
Technically yes; commercially it is a severe handicap. It is the first thing to enable, before optimising anything else.
Which language for Belgium?
Both, ideally. If you can only do one, match it to your target region and say clearly which regions you serve.
Do I need a local entity?
No, if you are already an EU seller. Register for OSS once you pass the EU-wide threshold.
Is English enough?
In the Netherlands it is understood but underperforms. In Belgium it is not sufficient.
