Salla vs Zid vs Shopify: Choosing an E-commerce Platform in Saudi Arabia

How the Saudi platform options really differ on cost, Arabic support, payments and lock-in — and how to pick without paying for features you will not use.

For a Saudi store the decision comes down to four things: does the checkout speak Arabic natively, does it support mada and cash on delivery, what does it cost per month once you add the apps you need, and can you leave with your data. Feature lists are mostly noise; those four questions separate the options.

The realistic shortlist

Salla and Zid are the two Saudi-built platforms. Both are Arabic-first by design, both integrate the local payment and shipping ecosystem, and both are familiar to Saudi merchants and their accountants. Pricing is subscription-based, often with tiers that gate the features growing stores need.

Shopify is the global default. Enormous app ecosystem, excellent reliability, and a real cost problem for a small Gulf store: a monthly subscription in dollars, plus paid apps for things that should be standard, plus additional fees if you do not use its own payments. Arabic and right-to-left support is workable but was not the original design.

WooCommerce is free software with unfree total cost: hosting, security, plugins, and someone to maintain it.

Storilive is built for exactly this market: Arabic-first, cash on delivery and Gulf payment methods as first-class citizens, free to open, and no commission on sales.

The four questions that actually matter

1. Is Arabic the first language or a translation?

Test it, do not read about it. Open the checkout in Arabic and look at: number formatting, the direction of the layout, whether the address form asks for the fields Saudi buyers actually have, and whether automated emails and SMS arrive in correct Arabic. A right-to-left layout that was retrofitted shows itself immediately at checkout, which is the worst possible place.

2. Does it support the local payment reality?

Non-negotiable: mada, cash on delivery, and a path to Apple Pay and BNPL. A platform that treats COD as an afterthought — no COD fee handling, no failed-delivery workflow — will cost you more in operations than it saves in subscription. See payment gateways in Saudi Arabia.

3. What is the real monthly cost?

Compare the loaded cost, not the headline plan:

Cost lineQuestion to ask
SubscriptionWhich tier do I need for the features I actually use?
Transaction feeDoes the platform take a cut on top of the gateway?
Apps / add-onsWhat am I paying extra for that should be included?
CurrencyAm I paying in dollars against a riyal revenue?

A store doing 30,000 SAR a month can easily lose a meaningful slice of its margin to platform costs it never audited.

4. Can you leave?

Ask before you commit: can you export products, customers and orders in a usable format, and can you point your own domain at the store? If either answer is no, you are not choosing a platform, you are choosing a landlord.

What to ignore

  • Template count. You will use one.
  • "Unlimited products." You will not have unlimited products.
  • AI feature lists. Judge the checkout and the order management; those are what you use every day.

A decision rule

  • Selling in Saudi Arabia, in Arabic, with COD and mada, and you want to keep your margin → a local Arabic-first platform. Storilive is free to open and takes no commission.
  • Selling globally, in English, with a large app-dependent operation and budget to match → Shopify.
  • You have a developer on the team and a reason to control everything → WooCommerce.

Frequently asked questions

Can I migrate later?

Yes, if you can export products, customers and orders — check that on the way in, not on the way out. Keep your own domain from day one so links and SEO follow you.

Does the platform affect my Google ranking?

Indirectly, through page speed, clean URLs and correct structured data. Content and links matter far more — see Arabic SEO for Google in Saudi Arabia.

Is a free platform worse?

It depends on the business model. Free-plus-commission means you pay more the more you sell. Free with no commission means the platform makes money elsewhere. Ask which one you are looking at.

What about just selling on Instagram?

Fine for validating demand, bad as a foundation: no checkout, no analytics, no customer list, and one policy change away from losing the channel. Use social to attract, and your own store to sell.
